How to Clean the Air In Your House

Modern living room

How do you clean the air in your home? It’s a question many homeowners struggle to find an answer to, but it’s also an important one. With more people spending time in their homes these days, the subject of indoor air quality should be top of mind. And what you may think is clean air may not be when you take a closer look. Here are some ways to keep the air inside your home clean and pure for everyone to breathe.

Risks of Poor Indoor Air Quality

Before we get to the “how” let’s take a quick look at the “why.” Even when your air looks clean to the naked eye, it may be contaminated with dust, mold spores, VOCs and other impurities. And it only stands to reason that these irritants are going to find their way into your lungs during the day and while you sleep. Here are some of the risks of having poor indoor air quality in your home:

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Nasal congestion
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Sore throats
  • Increased asthma symptoms
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

Improve the Ventilation

Ventilating your house by bringing in fresh air from outside can help to flush out a range of contaminants so they can’t cause any trouble. When possible, keep your windows open to create a nice cross breeze and in the kitchen, make good use of your fume hood while you cook. Of course, make sure you use this method sensibly and don’t have your windows open if you live in a place with a lot of outdoor pollution or if it’s pollen season.

Home Air Purifiers

Since air purifiers are specifically designed to remove certain pollutants from the air, they are a good choice when cleaning the air in your home. The way they work is by drawing the contaminated air in, removing the impurities, and then recycling the clean air back into your home. If you’re not sure which type of purifier is right for your home and specific situation, talk to one of our technicians at Appleby Systems today.

Change Your Filters

When your furnace filter gets clogged and dirty, some of that stuff is going to find its way into your ductwork and through to the various rooms of your house. Some experts recommend changing your filter every few months, but really you should change it whenever it is dirty, which could be up to every month.

Check the Humidity

Both excess moisture and not enough moisture can have an effect on indoor air quality, so it may be necessary to get a humidifier or dehumidifier, depending on your situation. Ideally, you want between 30% and 50% relative indoor humidity for the best indoor air quality.

Bring in Some Plants

It’s no secret that live plants increase the oxygen content of the air around them, but they can also remove harmful gases from the air. Some good ones to keep around your home are Devil’s Ivy, Dwarf Date Palm, Peace Lily, Spider Plants, and Rubber Plants.
