Energy-Efficient Thermostat Settings for Summer & Winter

Energy-Efficient Thermostat Settings for Summer & Winter

It’s common knowledge that your HVAC system uses a great deal of the energy that your home consumes. When you make adjustments to your HVAC system you can either burn a lot of energy, or you can keep things efficient and try to lower your impact on the environment and your energy bills by keeping the temperature in your house closer to the temperatures outside. In summer and winter, your settings matter the most.

People who keep their thermostat at relatively inefficient temperatures that are far above or below the norm often don’t know. So, we’ve created this guide to help you assess where you are and if you can change up your settings.

Recommended Thermostat Settings for Summer and Winter

Your thermostat settings should change with the seasons. In fact, you probably find that doing so keeps you more comfortable. No one wants to walk in from the winter air and need to take off their sweater, just like no one wants to walk in from the summer heat and need to change into pants. Your thermostat settings should change as the weather does, but by how much?

If you want to be aggressive about your efficiency, then we recommend:

  • 24 degrees Celsius in summer
  • 20 degrees Celsius in winter

You’ll notice that these temperatures are a few degrees off average. People tend to keep their thermostats closer to 22 degrees Celsius throughout the year. But those two degrees can make a big difference in your energy usage and your utility bills. If it seems like too much of a stretch from where you currently are temperature-wise, you can try adjusting the temperature by a single degree at a time. You may be surprised at how quickly you become comfortable with the new temperature.

How Can You Save More During the Winter at Night?

Many people cuddle up with heavy blankets in the winter and could potentially lower their home’s nighttime temperatures to save money without sacrificing their comfort. If you have a smart thermostat this becomes even easier, as it can turn the temperature back up to a comfortable level before you wake, so that you’re not too cold when you get out of bed.

Other HVAC System Efficiency Tips

Temperature is not the only thing that affects your HVAC system’s efficiency. When your furnace or air conditioner runs better, it will use less energy even at the same temperature. To keep the system efficient, you should:

  • Keep up with yearly maintenance needs.
  • Change out filters on a regular basis.
  • Get regular air duct cleanings.
