If you currently heat your home with a conventional or mid efficiency furnace, we recommend you purchase a high efficiency
furnace with an AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) of 94% or higher.
Conventional furnaces have an AFUE of between 60 to 65%. This means that for every dollar of gas used, 35 to 40 cents is lost up the chimney. Most conventional furnaces last between 15 and 20 years. Upgrading to a mid efficiency furnace with an AFUE of 80% can save approximately 20 to 23% of your gas heating costs. A high efficiency model will save an additional 10 to 15%.
There are several models of mid and high efficiency models available.
Singe stage furnaces will run at full capacity on any call for heat. The furnace is sized to heat your home during the coldest times of the year but for the majority of the heating season, your home only requires 50 to 60% of the furnace capacity.
Two stage models typically run at 65% of capacity at the first stage and automatically kick into full capacity when required. Longer run times in the initial stage help to make your home more comfortable by eliminating temperature swings while conserving energy.
Modulating furnaces can have as many as 65 stages of heat output. Furnaces with a variable speed or ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) are much quieter, longer lasting and operate for a fraction of the hydro costs of a standard furnace.
Modulating furnaces equipped with energy saving ECM blower motors offer the ultimate in home comfort conditioning, as modulating heat provides longer operating cycles and improves temperature stability. ECM variable speed blowers can reduce electrical consumption by up to 80%, minimize noise transmission (almost 24 times quieter than conventional furnaces), increase the efficiency of your central air conditioner by up to 16% and enhance humidity control in the summer and winter months.
Running your furnace continuously will also help prevent air stratification in your home—hot air rising to the ceiling and cold air dropping to the lowest levels.
