In 2006, the Ontario Government raised the minimum energy efficiency standard for central air conditioners and heat pumps. All new units manufactured or imported into Ontario must now meet a minimum efficiency of 13 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating. SEER ratings represent the number of BTUs per Watt of hydro used. This change directly benefits the consumer by reducing energy requirements, long term high energy costs and harmful emissions.
Much like a car’s fuel efficiency is gauged by kilometres per litre, the efficiency of air conditioners and heat pumps is measured in SEER—the higher the SEER, the more efficient the product. The minimum allowed SEER rating for new equipment is raising from a decade long 10 SEER to 13 SEER…a 30% increase. Approximately 50% of all energy used in a typical home today is spent on heating and cooling. This means the upgrade to 13 SEER will on average deliver a 23% energy savings to homeowners when compared to the standard 10 SEER models. Older models are between 6 and 10 SEER.
Older central air conditioners and heat pumps typically use R22 or Freon as a refrigerant. As Freon is an ozone depleting substance, it will be banned from new equipment manufactured and imported into Ontario in 2010. The manufacture of R22 will cease in 2020.
As supplies dwindle, the cost to service these air conditioners will rise dramatically and could lead to the replacement of fully functioning equipment prematurely. The replacement of existing air conditioners with R22 refrigerant requires the installer to reclaim the Freon for safe storage or disposal.
Puron is the registered trade name for Brant’s R410A refrigerant. Because it contains no chlorine, it is not damaging to the Earth’s ozone layer. By replacing your old unit with a R410A model, you are helping to preserve the environment while protecting yourself from potentially expensive service costs down the road.
Both Bryant® and Coleman® offer
products with R410A coolant and a limited selection of R22 units.
Two stage models offer the highest efficiencies (up to 20 SEER) and the quietest operation. Proper sizing and installation of the new equipment is critical to achieve the optimal performance. Split system air conditioners and heat pumps must also be matched with the appropriate factory approved coil components.
It is also important to replace your old refrigerant lines. Combining your new central air conditioner with a furnace using a variable speed Electronically Commutated Motor (ECM) will increase the SEER rating by up to 2 SEER.
